Michael Bergmann – Digital Transformation in the Pulp and Paper Industry – A System Suppliers Journey

Abstract

Digital Transformation, Industry 4.0, Industrial Internet of Things and many other buzzwords have been describing the enormous transformation process of various industries. Several years have passed after Industry 4.0 was announced for the pulp and paper industry as well. The present talk discusses challenges that have been driving the digitalization process in the pulp and paper industry and key advancements in digital technologies in that respect. Beyond that, an introduction to the world of pulp and paper production is provided and the company ANDRITZ AG, being a leading supplier in that area, and its digital portfolio are introduced.

About the speaker

Dipl.-Ing. Dr Michael Bergmann, received his MSc in Information Technologies with honours in 2008, his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with honours in 2012 and his MSc in Electrical Engineering and Business in 2014 from Graz University of Technology. He worked for the Institute of Communication Networks and Satellite Communications from 2008 to 2014 contributing to international R&D projects in satellite communications and small satellite missions. Before joining the Department of Deployment and Innovation at Eutelsat SA in Paris in 2016 concerned with innovative satellite communication techniques and IoT he held a management position as executive officer at an SME. Since 2018 Dr Bergmann has been working for ANDRITZ AG in Graz, where he headed the Industrial Internet of Things, Digitalization and Automation group in the Pulp Drying department until 2023. Currently, he holds the position of Director of Business Development EMEA for ANDRITZ Paper Engineered Services. Dr. Bergmann is author and co-author of scientific papers, reports and patents in the field of digital communication techniques and Industrial Internet of Things.
